A miller tells the king his daughter can spin straw into gold, which is not true and not his to promise. She is locked in a tower to do it anyway, a strange little man turns up offering to help for a price, and the price gets steeper each night. Mac Barnett tells it with his usual timing and a sly narrator's voice, and Carson Ellis illustrates in the flat folk-art style she does better than anyone. The second in their series of retold fairy tales, and a good version to have even if you already own one, because it is doing something different with the same bones.
