Half the pleasure of a museum is the moment you recognize something before you read the label. This set contains twenty-eight cards, each printed with a famous painting and its title, ranging from Botticelli and Vermeer through Van Gogh, Degas, Klimt, and Kandinsky. The premise is in the name: work out who painted what, then turn the card over. The back of each one gives a short life of the artist and where they sit in the history of their movement, then a full account of the painting itself, its medium, size, and date, what is actually happening in the scene, and which museum holds it today. It is closer to a wall text at the Musée d'Orsay than an answer key, which is what turns the guessing game into something you keep going back to.
