Lois Ehlert built every picture in this book out of real leaves, seeds, and pods that she gathered and pressed. Leaf Man has acorns for eyes and a body of maple and oak, and once the autumn wind picks up he goes wherever it takes him, over marshes and orchards and fields of pumpkins. The top edge of each page is die cut into the shape of a horizon, so the landscape shifts as the pages turn. Ehlert closes with an author's note and a labeled chart of the leaves she used, which makes the book easy to carry outside and match against whatever is actually on the ground. She won a Caldecott Honor for Color Zoo.
