Light is the thing children notice first here. Set inside each solid beechwood block is a panel of translucent acrylic in a rainbow color, so a tower built near a window throws colored shapes across the floor and the whole set becomes something to look through as well as build with. The blocks are sculptural enough to leave out on a shelf and sturdy enough to be stacked, balanced, sorted and knocked down for years, which is the useful combination in a set like this. Nordic in feel, warm in the hand, and the kind of thing that ends up belonging to the family rather than to one child.
