Long before a child can hold a brush steadily enough to aim it, they can press a whole hand flat onto paper and see what happens, and that is the moment these paints are made for. They arrive as powder in four jars, which sounds like extra work and turns out to be the opposite: you mix a spoonful with the same amount of water, get exactly as much paint as you need, and the rest of the jar stays dry on the shelf for next time instead of skinning over. Anything you mix and do not use keeps covered in the refrigerator for a day or two. The pigments come from fruit, vegetables and minerals rather than from a lab, so the colors are named for what they came from, cabbage green, watermelon red, blueberry blue and orange, and the ingredient list reads like a pantry: potatoes, rice, beans. Nothing in a jar should go in a mouth, but nothing in a jar will hurt if it does.
