Virginia Lee Burton wrote her first book in 1937 for her eldest son Aristides, after the two of them spent an afternoon at the station watching the trains come and go. Choo Choo is a small black locomotive who grows tired of pulling coaches and decides one day to run off down the line on her own. The story is told in rhythmic prose full of sound and motion, and Burton's black and white drawings carry the engine through smoke, speed, and eventual trouble. Burton lived and worked in Folly Cove, in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and went on to win the 1942 Caldecott Medal for The Little House. Choo Choo has stayed in print since its first publication and reads aloud well for children who are drawn to trains.
