Mitsumasa Anno drew wordless books you could look at for an hour and still find something new in. This one follows Don Quixote through Spain, past windmills and buildings by Antoni Gaudí, with paintings by Picasso, Dalí, and Velázquez tucked into the scenes. Look closely and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs turn up too, while Columbus’s Santa Maria waits offshore. There is plenty to notice before you reach Anno’s notes at the back, which explain the journey and some of its references without giving everything away.
