Beautiful paper has a way of getting saved rather than used, and this book holds enough of it that you can afford to be generous. Reiko Harajo, a Japanese art director, built these sheets by collaging engraved ornament drawn from seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth century copper plate printing, which gives the patterns a fineness that only an engraver's line produces. There are ditsy florals on cream, silver stars scattered across pale pink, gold lattice, aqua stripes, rose trellis, and a run of writing sheets framed in elaborate cartouches with the faintest TO and FROM already lettered in. Many are printed in gold or silver on stock chosen to suit the design, and every sheet lifts cleanly out of the binding for letters, gift wrap, collage, or lining a drawer. The book also includes an introduction to the decorative motifs of the French caricaturist J.J. Grandville.
